Physical Therapy Q & A

What are the benefits of physical therapy?

Physical therapy is beneficial in improving mobility and motion. It has been proven effective for treating back pain, meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disk disease, among other conditions. Dr. K works collaboratively with his patients and treatment plans are designed for the patient's individual goals, challenges, and needs. Receiving treatment by Dr. K is rarely a passive activity, and participating in your own recovery can be empowering. Dr. K is your partner in rebuilding your strength, flexibility, and range of motion. These facets of your physical well-being will not only aid your recovery from injury or illness but also help you become stronger and less susceptible to injury in the future.

What should I expect during my physical therapy treatments?

Your first therapy visit will include an initial evaluation before treatment to decide the best possible approach. During the treatment, you will be instructed on therapeutic exercises, educated on how to manage and care for your symptoms, and receive manual therapy if necessary. Patients may be given a specific home program such as ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, and are educated in ways to speed recovery and prevent recurrence of the problem.

What type of treatment will I receive?

Treatment is based on the initial evaluation findings along with ongoing reassessment and evaluation. It may consist of a variety of hands-on joint and soft tissue treatment techniques, exercise techniques, and pain reducing modalities. These types of treatment are designed to increase motion and strength, reduce pain, and restore function. Physical therapy helps ease the suffering of musculoskeletal injuries and aids in recovering from surgeries or other difficulties such as improving balance or walking problems. People recovering from non-orthopedic surgeries can also find PT beneficial to regaining strength and endurance. Dr. K will tailor a treatment plan to your needs and address all aspects of the problem to get you back to optimal health.
